Fabrication Buyer Checklist

1) How to choose a fabrication partner

• Process fit: can they cut/form/weld/machine the interfaces your assembly needs?
• Quality system: do they operate with controlled revisions and inspection intent (especially for aerospace/defense supply chains)?
• Communication: do they ask the right clarifying questions about datums, fit-critical features, and finish?
• Traceability expectations: are material and inspection documentation needs understood up front?
• Repeatability: can they support prototype-to-production handoff with consistent assumptions?

2) What to include in RFQs (quote-ready package)

• Current revision PDF drawing + STEP (and DXF where applicable)
• Quantity and expected repeat schedule (prototype vs repeat production)
• Material and condition when known
• Timeline and any “must-hit” dates
• Critical-to-function features highlighted (fit, seal, locate)
• Tolerance and datum strategy when known; note inspection intent for critical features
• Finish requirements (and whether they are cosmetic or functional)
• Any packaging/handling constraints (surface protection, serialization, etc.)

3) Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)

Revision ambiguity

If multiple files exist (PDF, STEP, DXF), state which revision controls. If the model drives geometry and the drawing drives tolerances, call that out explicitly.

Over-tightening non-critical dimensions

Tightening every feature forces unnecessary inspection and risk. Tighten only what drives function.

No measurement intent for critical features

If the feature is hard to measure, it’s hard to verify. When possible, include acceptance criteria and datum references.

4) Buyer-friendly questions to ask suppliers

• “Which features are critical-to-function and how will you verify them?”
• “What assumptions are you making about datums or inspection?”
• “What drives lead time: material, setups, inspection, outside processing?”
• “If we repeat this job, what will you do to keep it consistent?”
