CAD Preparation Guide

1) File types (what to send)

• PDF drawing: controlled dimensions, tolerances, notes, and revision.
• STEP (.step/.stp): preferred 3D model exchange for machining and assemblies.
• DXF: flat patterns / profiles when applicable.
• DWG: accepted in many workflows, but PDF + STEP is usually more quote-ready.

2) Revision control (the fastest way to prevent quoting mistakes)

• Include the revision letter/number in the filename (example: PART-123_REV-B.pdf).
• State which file is authoritative if multiple formats exist.
• If you upload updates, include a short note: what changed, what didn’t.

3) Tolerances (what matters most for quoting)

If you have tight tolerances, highlight the interfaces that must fit. Tight tolerances often change inspection time and process control, so identifying critical-to-function features improves quote accuracy.

• Provide datums (or describe the assembly reference) when possible.
• Use GD&T where it clarifies intent (true position, profile), not as decoration.
• Include surface finish requirements if they are functional (seal, bearing, cosmetic).

4) Materials and notes (avoid assumptions)

• Material and condition (example: 6061-T6, 304 SS, Ti-6Al-4V, Inconel 718)
• Heat treat or hardness requirements
• Corrosion/temperature environment (if it drives finish or alloy choice)
• Any special handling or packaging needs

5) Quote-ready engineering notes (best practices)

• Flag critical interfaces and how they mate (bearing fit, sealing face, alignment pattern).
• Specify quantity and whether this is prototype or repeat production.
• If there’s an RFQ number or milestone date, include it.
